Episode 29: Scarlet Hiltibidal, author of ‘Afraid of All the Things’

Fear is something we don’t always like to talk about. But gear up, because this conversation with author Scarlet Hiltibidal is full of talk about fear.

This is a pretty topical conversation right now given what’s going on in the world. We all might be getting adjusted to life during COVID-19, but I’m guessing at some point all of us have experienced some level of fear during this. Scarlet’s book Afraid of All the Things: Tornadoes, Cancer, Adoption, and Other Stuff You Need the Gospel For is all about fear, anxiety, phobias, and anything in between. Scarlet has joked that she needs to amend the title to include the Coronavirus.

But what I love about Scarlet, and this book, is that she takes a humorous approach to fear. She grew up in the green room of Saturday Night Live, with her mother Victoria Jackson starring on the show in the early 90s, so that comedic upbringing shines through in this book and this conversation as she’s able to approach fear and some rather serious life instances with a bit of humor.

We talked a lot about her book and the stories she shared in it, including a cancer scare and adopting a deaf child from China, how to find rest in the Lord and how she approaches fear differently now versus as a child.

I wrote some thoughts on her book, and I definitely recommend you reading it, especially given the season we find ourselves in.
